The first mummies were probably an accident! The Egyptians buried the dead in the hot desert sand to save the farm land by the Nile River. However, the blazing sand dried out the bodies and kept them from decaying.

The process of making a mummy
Egyptians believe in making mummies so that their bodies did not decay and they could go on to the Next Life. Making a mummy took a very long time and many people. There were many steps to making a mummy.
- Remove all of the organs and putting them in jars.
- Wash the body and rub it with oils and spices.
- Cover the body in salt that it dries out, like it did in the hot sand.
- Let the body dry for at least 40 days.
- Wrap the body in strips of linen from head to toe.
- Place the mummy in its case.
